To search or not to search - Find website content

One thing that always seems to arise when talking to clients about web design projects they request a search on their website. But should the search Digital Marketing Agency Southampton  be placed on all websites by default?

When we talk about a search site we are referring to the one that searches all the content on each page of the website.

Our usual answer is: "Its horses for courses."

If you have a 5 page brochure style site then there is little point in having a search as a people must clearly be able to see part of what is and what information is available.

Even the site of 50 pages, if structured correctly should lead people easily to the content they need.

We have always found that the search sites will usually return the result of non-specific as it searches through reams of content. For example, on site with the technique, say 50 pages, looking for key words can be back in 40 pages, including about us, contact us, testimonials, because of the possibility of a word is mentioned throughout the content for SEO purposes. While simply by clicking on Products> wrench of navigation is likely to make you directly to what you are looking for.

The only time when we would recommend a search on the website are when:

1. The site has a large database of products such as play.com sites. Yes, you can browse through the categories, but sometimes you just want to get straight to the actual item. It's not a static website content search, only the database so that any results will be relevant.

2. A site based on a great article in which you can not browse to all the information and you have to rely on a quest to find older content, for example.

If the site is well organized and designed then usually there is little need to have a full site search for information to be easily found through navigation. Keeping the search for certain things on the site that search through your database of products or Digital Marketing Agencies Southampton  articles that the results are more targeted and relevant.
